Tākiri (verb) (-hia,-tia) to dawn, fly back, flick, strike, deeply affect the emotions, move.
Ka tākiritia atu he māti, kua kā te raiti (HP 1991:17). / A match is struck and the light burns. (Te Aka Online Māori Dictionary).

Tākiri Ensemble is a brand new, exciting vocal group, featuring amazingly-talented and internationally-renowned kiwi musicians: four opera singers and a pianist.

We are seeking funding for our tour, which is part of the CMNZ Encompass Regional Concerts programme. The tour is titled 'Leibe und Leben' and will feature a programme of lied and art song, combined with New Zealand works. We will perform to audiences in Kaitaia, Wanaka, Motueka, Waikanae, Wanganui, Rotorua and Whakatane. Join us by making a donation and we promise to sing our hearts out for you.

We are unique in Australasia. In a first-time collaboration, internationally acclaimed soprano, Anna Leese, joins stunning mezzo soprano Bianca Andrew, the fantastically-talented Andrew Glover, tenor, Robert Tucker, baritone and Kirsten Simpson, pianist. Our vision is to sing the beautiful and rarely performed classical song ensembles, presenting them in a fresh way. We hope to eventually commission works and record a CD. The whole Ensemble sees a big future ahead and hopes to perform in NZ and eventually Australia and Asia.

We all have a passion for education outreach and plan to perform concerts and workshops in schools. We will begin the tour with Mahurangi College on Friday 21st August in Warkworth. This will be the first in a series of education performances.

Tākiri Ensemble is delighted to welcome you on the journey of our debut tour in August and September, with Chamber Music New Zealand. All funding will go towards travel costs, accommodation and other tour expenses.

Chamber Music New Zealand Encompass Tours cover the length and breadth of NZ, working with a range of artists and regional chamber music presenters. In this way CMNZ tries to foster the development of young New Zealand artists - and we are grateful to them for selecting the Takiri ensemble for its Encompass programme. The fee we receive for these concerts is modest - and we need to supplement it to cover our own costs.

We will update all our Boosted supporters on tour highlights and let you know all the news.

  • We made it, because of you!

What a humbling and incredible thing that we have achieved 100% of our funding with one day still remaining. Thank you so much to all who have contributed to this campaign- we will be emailing you each an update in a few days or so which outlines exactly how these funds will be distributed. We have exciting plans!
Thank you for believing in us.
    Love, Tākiri. xx

  • We're almost there! Here's what we've been up to...

    Dear friends of Tākiri Ensemble,

We are writing from the Interislander Ferry, heading for Wellington where we will be based for the next few days before we perform our next concert in Waikanae!

We are absolutely delighted to have made it to 85% funded for our Boosted campaign to help us cover the costs of our tour. A huge thank-you to you all for helping us to get this far. The challenge is not over yet, but we are confident that with the excellent support and positivity of our growing audiences, we will reach 100% by Tuesday 1 September (in four short days)!

We have spent the last week in the South Island, performing in Wanaka and Motueka - prior to that we had our very first concert in Kaitaia. Our audiences have been overwhelming with their enthusiasm for our group and our programme. By far the most popular parts of our concerts have been the New Zealand compositions by Ross Harris, Anthony Ritchie and David Hamilton. We have noticed that people really feel a direct affinity with the poetry and the sound-worlds these composers have created; their music becomes even more potent when it is sung in the setting in which it was born. All the positive feedback is fuel for our artistic fire as a group - we are passionate about performing and creating Kiwi music; planning is already underway to commission more New Zealand compositions specifically for us.

Last week we had our first photo shoot as the Tākiri Ensemble on a stunning winter's morning on Omaha Beach, north of Auckland. We are delighted to share this photo with our Boosted friends - hopefully you can't tell how cold that water is!

We'd also like to share a special recording of Vaughan Williams' 'Linden Lea'. We recorded this during our educational concert held at Mahurangi College in Warkworth. Just click on this link to have a listen:
