My name is Sophie Sparrow and I'm a singer from Whangarei, Northland. My first stage role was a flea - I was 8 years old. Singing and performing has always been my dream, and later this year I am pursuing that in London, UK. I have an incredible opportunity to complete my Masters at the prestigious Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Guildhall has awarded me a part-scholarship to go towards tuition fees, and this year I've been fundraising for the remainder of my tuition fees and accommodation costs. This Boosted campaign will assist with covering some of those remaining expenses.

So, who am I?

I was 14 years old when the incredible Joan Kennaway (QSM) opened my eyes to the beauty of opera. I hired the DVD of The Magic Flute from the library and watched it countless times, putting my favourite scenes on repeat, I quickly became hooked.

I graduated from the University of Otago in 2014, with a Bachelor of Music in Classical Voice (first class honours) under the tutelage of Isabel Cunningham and Frances Wilson (ONZM), and in 2016 with a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting.

Whilst performing throughout the country - Pamina in The Magic Flute, Barbarina in The Marriage of Figaro, with The Freemasons NZ Opera Chorus, attended the DMMF Opera Studies Courses, and performed with the APO at the NZ Aria finals - I've been training with Frances Wilson at the Auckland opera Studio.

Where to next?

After studying, singing and working throughout New Zealand, it's time for me to spread my wings and fly the nest. I've been given a chance of a lifetime to study at the top conservatoire in the UK. I can't wait to start.

The Guildhall Artist Masters is a two-year Masters programme designed to prepare young singers for the demands of the industry. Guildhall provides students with performance opportunities and a wide range of training in opera, language, and stagecraft.

Join me on my journey to London!

This is my biggest singing journey to date and I would love you to join me on this adventure. Thank you for helping me make my dream become a reality. Your continuing support is forever appreciated and I hope you enjoy this journey with me.

With love, Sophie x

  • Extremely Humbled!

What an incredible couple of weeks it has been. Thank you so much to the amazing people that have supported my Boosted Campaign thus far. It is extremely humbling and exciting to see the support from friends and family. Words cannot describe how thankful I am for your support.

The past couple of weeks have been a whirl wind of travel, concerts, competitions and training with much more to come during my remaining weeks in NZ. On Sunday 5th August I had my Fundraising Farewell Concert in my hometown Whangarei. It was great to see so many beautiful smiling supportive faces in the audience. With my wonderful guest artists Jarvis Dams, Anna Mahon, and Juan Kim I feel the concert was a great success. Thank you everyone for coming along.

Once returning to Auckland the next day, I packed up my dresses, singing shoes, and music and jumped on a flight to Sydney to compete in the Semi-finals of the IFAC Handa Australian Singing Competition. This was an amazing opportunity and an incredible competition to be a part of. We attended a workshop on the Wednesday, had private adjudication Thursday, Friday off, and then the public concert Saturday. Having not been to Sydney before I also had a wonderful time exploring the city during my time off and spending time with my family and friends that came over to support me. Although I didn't make the finals, I am thrilled to have been awarded the Instituto Italiano Di Cultura Award. I will head back to Sydney to attend a 25hours Italian course in the near future.

Arriving back to NZ this Tuesday I raced from the airport to Opera Factory's Fundraising Soiree where I performed with fellow up and coming opera singers amongst the beautiful art at the Kelliher Art Gallery in Parnell.

Now I prepare for my Auckland Fundraiser Concerts this weekend.
I would love to see you all there. Saturday 18th August at St Mark's Remuera, tickets at https://www.eventfinda.co.nz/2018/sophie-sparrows-auckland-benefit-concert/auckland/remuera or at the door and Sunday 19th August at the Auckland Opera Studio, St Benedicts Street, donation at the door.

Please share these events and Boosted Campaign with your friends and family. Every bit helps to reach my target, with as little as $5 you can be a part of my journey and help get me to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in September.

    Much love,
    Sophie x
