Marty Roberts

Hello, I am a Designer/lighting designer/ still photographer/image-maker,working in many performing and visual arts fields in NZ. As well as having my own company, afterburner, which pursues site specific based theatre, I work as a freelance designer and exhibits as a stills art photographer. I am a Professional Practice Fellow at The University of Otago Theatre Studies programme where I teach performance technology and design. I have been honoured to have been awarded many Chapman Tripp Theatre awards for my lighting work over the years. I have recently completed my Master of Fine Arts, with ‘Dark Matter’, looking at lighting on the edge of seeing. In this investigation I explored light and dark, where the human eye can barely see a lit object or person, yet is able to construct meaning from what is seen.
