Robert Gilbert


Robert began his theatre career in 1981 as a trainee actor with Prospect Theatre Company in Hamilton and has since appeared in scores of professional theatre and television productions. As a director, he has won Best Production awards at many NZ Theatre Festivals, the Norfolk Island Theatre Festival, Port Macquarie Theatre Festival, and the Best Director Award at the Norfolk Island Festival an unprecedented four times. He counts his time learning at Globe Education in 2011 as his most meaningful and has just returned from London where his learning included workshops at The Globe, RSC, and the National Theatre. As a playwright, Robert has written 20 plays, mostly for children or adult comedies. In both 2010 and 2011, Robert was short listed for the PLAYMARKET Plays for the Young competition.

I have been extremely lucky to have been selected for the Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Emerging Theatre Practitioner's Programme (ETPP), which involves spending two months in London as an intern at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre and the Sam Wanamaker Theatre. I will be working with two Youth Theatre Companies in the community for a presentation of Henry V, as well as taking workshops and getting stuck into teaching kids and learning, learning, learning!!!
