Leah Carrell

Leah Carrell is a dance theatre artist currently based in Auckland. Before doing her contemporary dance training at Unitec Leah trained in theatre, dance and Maori studies at the University of Otago. Leah has choreographed full length show Ocean Between My Feet (Dunedin, 2013) and co-choreographed Mo(u)ld which premiered and was nominated for Best Dance at the Dunedin Fringe Festival (2016). She won the 'Risk Taker Award' at this year's Short+Sweet Dance Festival with her new choreography Shroud. Leah currently co-facilitates the establishing live-choreography practice Composure (Auckland) and dances as a support dancer with Touch Compass Dance Trust. She has also been involved in various short films and theatre productions. Before doing her contemporary dance training at Unitec Leah trained in theatre, dance, and Māori studies at the University of Otago. As an establishing dance theatre artist, Leah is interested in site-specific work, Practice-as-Research, improvisation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She has worked extensively with Marty Roberts, Ali East, Maria Dabrowska, Miriam Marler, Hana Aoake and Hahna Briggs; all collaborations which have greatly influenced Leah's approach to making and presenting work. Leah also loves to sew, drink coffee, travel around New Zealand and swim in the ocean!
