Logan Park High School Big Band

The Logan Park High School Jazz Band has had a long history of excellence in musical performance. Initially formed by jazz educator Calder Prescott in 1983, the band was the first secondary school jazz band in New Zealand. Many NZ musicians have developed their skills in this band over the last 35 years. In the spirit of student ownership, the Band currently call themselves ‘The Big Bad Big Band’. The BBBB is currently directed by Logan Park’s HoD Music, John Dodd.
In 2018 BBBB were winners of the Big Band section of the inaugural Dunedin Youth Jazz Festival. In 2017 the band received a Silver Award at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim. A large number of current band members are all in the same year at school (currently year 12), and they have very firmly developed a culture based on friendship and shared experience. Many are highly experienced players for their age.

Members are encouraged to take ownership of aspects of the performance and organisation; repertoire is part-selected by the band. Several members are now keen to explore opportunities to solo, and MC the show. The Band’s current emphasis is toward funk and r and b, however there are some swing classics too.
