Lavinnia Rae is currently under the tutelage of James Tennant at the Waikato Conservatorium of Music (BMus Honours) before moving to London to begin her Masters of Performance at the Royal College of Music in September this year. A graduate of the New Zealand School of Music having completed a Bachelor of Music on full scholarship, she was also accepted at 16 as the top classical performance auditionee. Furthermore she has a Bachelor of Arts major in film studies through Victoria University of Wellington.
Lavinnia is the Principal Cellist of the NZSO National Youth Orchestra, a position held since 2017, and a member of the NYO every year since her first programme in 2013. As well as the NZSO NYO, she is a current New Zealand Symphony Orchestra fellow. In 2014-2017 Lavinnia was the Principal Cello of the Wellington Youth Orchestra, and 2016-2017 Principal Cello of the New Zealand School of Music orchestra. Lavinnia is a casual member of four professional orchestras; New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Wellington, Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra, and Opus Orchestra. 2018 Tours with the NZSO include; Mozart & Mahler, Berlioz Debussy & Ravel, and Simon Trpčeski Plays Grieg.
After winning the 2016 New Zealand School of Music/Wellington Youth Orchestra full orchestral category concerto competition, she performed the Shostakovich Cello Concerto No. 1 as her soloist debut in the Michael Fowler Centre with the combined orchestras. Lavinnia is also a keen chamber musician, and was last year selected as one of the New Zealand String Quartet’s Troubadours Quartet members.
