“I was born with music inside me. Music was one of my parts. Like my ribs, my kidneys, my liver, my heart. Like my blood. It was a force already within me when I arrived on the scene. It was a necessity for me - like food or water.” - Ray Charles. If I had to pick one statement to summarise myself, this would be it. My name is Hamish Smith, I am currently 19 years old and have recently graduated from Burnside High School in Christchurch, New Zealand. I have been playing music for almost ten years and my passion has continued to develop, leading to many successes at competitions, placement in programs and national ensembles, as well as gaining scholarships.
I have worked very hard to get to the level I am at now, so my musical success includes high commendation from the New Zealand School of Music staff and international artists including Luis Bonilla, Dick Oatts, Scott Wendholt, and Alex Sipiagin. I have also won numerous awards over the past five years and these are a reflection of the effort I put into my Jazz music. Some of my most prestigious awards include:
- Best Bassist at National New Zealand Jazz Festival 2015
- Best Overall Musician at National New Zealand Jazz Festival 2015
- Winner of the New Zealand School of Music Improvisation Contest 2014, 2015, 2016
My long term goal is to play Jazz professionally on the international stage, and to use this to show the world my identity, and what it means to be from the New Zealand culture.
