Kate Riegle van West
I am an interdisciplinary artist currently researching the effects of poi on physical and cognitive function in healthy older adults. I have studied poi (originally a Maori art, which involves swinging a weight on the end of a flexible cord in circular patterns around your body) in many ways on many levels, from opening a flow arts storefront in Chicago, to creating a musical instrument rooted in poi during my MFA, to giving a TED talk on the potential therapeutic value poi.
I am currently pursuing a PhD at the University of Auckland studying poi and health. I graduated from Columbia College Chicago in 2011 with an M.F.A in Interdisciplinary Art and Media, and obtained my B.S. in Arts Technology from Illinois State University in 2007.
