Stark Theatre: born 1997. created by Amanda Rees who says this:
I trained at Toi Whakaari graduating way back in 1990. Performed here and there : Bats and Circa Theatre in Wellington before returning home to Auckland.
I started directing in 2000 with a show called Ponsonby Rd (clearly local and very funny gay play), and since then have done oodles of kids shows as a director for Tim Bray Productions as well as creating devised shows like my solo show based on the life of Freda Stark (as actor/writer) and Fierce, Child (as director/co writer).
In 1997 first started producing shows with my solo show Stark, and quickly followed by the premiere of a play written by Gaelyn Gordon which had a central theme of autism. In that play I was a performer with Hester Joyce directing. Since then I've produced as a director/producer picking shows which for me touch on topics I care about, and which are also of course being clever, funny and entertaining: Steel Magnolias (which had never had a professional production previously in Auckland), Half Life (brilliant Canadian play about contentious love between residents in a rest home), Fierce, Child (an edgy nite club drag / performance artiste solo show) and now Sister Anzac.
