Hinemoana Baker

I am a writer, creative writing teacher and musician of Ngāi Tahu, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Te Āti Awa , English and German heritage. I'm passionate about using language and sound to bring things out into the light to be examined, recalibrated, celebrated.

I'm known mainly as a poet, but this year I am challenging myself with another form in order to tell some family stories that have haunted me for a long time: 'Hard times and healing' (Nelson Evening Mail)

My first poetry book, mātuhi | needle, was co-published in New Zealand (by Victoria University Press) and in the US (by actor and writer Viggo Mortensen's publishing house, Perceval Press. My second collection is kōiwi kōiwi | bone bone (VUP 2010) and my most recent, 'waha | mouth' (VUP 2014) was named as one of the NZ Listener's Top Poetry Books of 2014.

I'm a proud and grateful graduate of the prestigious MA programme at the International Institute of Modern Letters at Victoria University, Wellington.

You can read more about me on my website.

Special thanks to Robert Cross who took this photograph of me.

Kia ora! I'm a poet and teacher of creative writing in Wellington. The new book I'm writing tells two haunting family stories: my father's time spent as a child in a Catholic orphanage in Nelson, and my own story of trying to become a parent and experiencing infertility. It's about what it means to lose a parent, to be a parent, and to lose the opportunity to have children of your own. On a wider level it's about me connecting with my father through our shared experiences of grief. For the last year I have been Creative New Zealand Victoria University Writer in Residence in Wellington. I've researched and written 40,000 words of a new book, 'Dear Mother Basillise'. I need one more year of writing and researching full time to take my book to the point where I can submit it to my publisher. I'm asking my 'Boosted' supporters to help me with the first six months of that.
