Paul Janman attempted to understand part of the modern Pacific with his 2012 film Tongan Ark. The documentary looks at Tongan philosopher Futa Helu, and the independent university he founded in Nuku’alofa in 1963. Janman himself is half-Welsh, but raised in NZ. Alongside varied experimental projects and videographies, he lectures in screen production at AUT and critical practice at Unitec.
"Philosophy and filmmaking have caused me to sit with visionaries on pavements and in schools and temples in neglected corners of the earth. Otherwise, I'm interested in what the average person does to stay sane in the Auckland suburbs."
