Ray Chan joins the list of exciting new generation artists as an award winning conductor and concert pianist. Born in Hong Kong (1990 – ) and raised in Auckland since a toddler, Ray has been described by the Singapore Straits Times as a conductor "...with an inner illumination borne of passion and professionalism".
He was named First Prize Winner of the 2012 Graz International Conductor's Mastercourse Competition in Austria. More recently and after an extensive international audition process, he has been offered one of only two places to study at the Royal Academy of Music's prestigious postgraduate orchestral conducting studio in London. Ray is the very first New Zealander to have ever been accepted into this programme.
Ray graduated his BMus (Hons) in piano performance cum laude from the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music and has since also debuted as a conductor in several European music festivals with critical acclaim. He has also trained as a cellist since a teenager when he first fell in love with the allure of the orchestra and its influence to touch people beyond words. Beyond music, Ray loves traveling, a good afternoon swim and/or diving into a great history doco with a bag of chips.
With your help, here begins his search to fulfil a lifelong dream of representing NZ at the highest musical platforms and to eventually bring some great music-making back home!
