Java Dance Theatre is ready to return to the famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival this year with their newest and most daring show yet. The Wine Project is a critically acclaimed dance theatre work about wine making, power and village politics.

The show is highly visceral with live music played by the cast of five dancers and musicians, set in a scintillating world of spice  and performed on a set of French wine barrels. A cellist tends the vines, a dancer crushes the grapes, and everyone ferments the juice. The Wine Project invites the audience into a sensual world of ritual and revelry. Delighted responses from festival audiences across New Zealand, including Wanaka, Invercargill, Nelson, Tauranga and Hawkes Bay have set the stage here, and we're ready to bring The Wine Project to new audiences on the other side of the world.

Thanks to the success of our New Zealand tour we are already part of the way there. We have received funding from Creative New Zealand towards some of the costs of taking The Wine Project to Edinburgh, but to bring it to full fruition we need your help. The Wine Project is bigger, brighter and even more delicious smelling than any of our other shows. We are seeking $10,000 to buy 5 barrels and 850 cinnamon sticks (we can't get them through customs!) and to accommodate a thoughtful cellist, a charismatic violinist and three enchanting dancers while they perform 32 shows. Join us in bringing this enticing show to Edinburgh!

"The audience's faces alight with pleasure, concern, regret, tension, understanding-  utterly enthralled with the mime and explosion of emotions in front of them. Yes, it has a story, but this is a dance of joy you feel to the extreme, a drama you know in your soul, a dark secret they share that you won't admit is yours." The Wine Project  Theatreview

Java Dance Theatre clambers into your senses and gets under your skin. We explore the boundaries of the unexpected. It's a sensory experience where the audience is essential. Our signatures are intense physicality, emotional engagement and audience immersion. The Wine Project does all this and more.

Your support large or small will make a real difference. The vines of this campaign are already growing. Please donate generously. Immerse yourself. We have 5 weeks to get there.

  • We took the wine to the world and they want more!

After an epic August in Edinburgh we want to thank you all for making it all possible!!! We were delighted to finish our final wine show in Edinburgh on Monday 29th finished with a standing ovation. After a month of wine shows and audience wine tastings, 5 and 4 star reviews, Scottish barrels, rotating casts, fabulous feedback and some interest from Brighton and the Aussies (plus dancing on a bus and interest from Shanghai) we are ready to come home!!! (and start making the next work in the series - The Creamery). We were proud to represent the originality of unique New Zealand and we couldn't have done it without you all. We also want to give a shout out to Creative NZ, the NZ France Friendship Fund and Urlar Estate for their support! Thanks again for boosting The Wine Project (In the Wine) to the world and we'll keep you updated with the next step in the wine journey. But first we need to all get home and pack for South Korea with a wine inspired installation (premiered in 2014 for the Performance Arcade) programmed by the Seoul Street Arts Festival, followed closely by the Dunedin Arts Festival season of The Wine Project in October! We can't wait to do the show in NZ again!!!

    Greetings, Bonjour, Ola, Ciao!

For all you fabulous supporters, here's a taste of The Wine Project. It's hot off editor Mike Potton's laptop

Java dancer Sarah Gatzonis has just escaped from The Wine Barrel and is about to jump on the plane to Hamilton to perform at the Hamilton Gardens Festival this Saturday 27th and Sunday 28th February with Mikey, Emma, Tristan, Charley and Sacha. But first there is just one more busy night in Wellington! Mikey, Sacha and Emma will perform with 150 members of the general public in Le Grand Continental for the opening of the NZ Festival at Civic Square at 8.30pm Friday 26th February. After more than three months of rehearsing everyone is ready to hit the dance floor! Meanwhile Charley and Tristan will be playing up a storm with The Troubles, New Zealand's leading contemporary jazz group. What a talented crew!

While all this has been going we have been super excited about our BOOSTED crowdfunding campaign to raise $10, 000 to cover the cost of Accommodation, barrels and cinnamon sticks for our 2016 Edinburgh season this August. We are so delighted to be at 46% (almost at 47%) of our BOOSTED crowdfunding target with 12 days to go but we need your help! Chip in now to tip us over 50% and help spread the message. • Wellington Hamilton and then the World!

    Hi everyone!

Thank you to all the delightful people who shared the Circa Theatre season of The Wine Project with us! There were over 1200 of you throwing mint (don't worry we have cleaned the new Circa seats meticulously) smelling cinnamon and clapping up a storm. Here's a few words from audience member Katrina Thomas about her Wine Project experience

"Loved the whole gypsy vibe, the excesses and debauchery, the body percussion, the grime, the sweat, the sheer earthiness of it all. I can only imagine how good that post-performance shower must've felt..."

Now that we have all had showers and a moment to stretch out our muscles, there is one more Kiwi stop to prepare for before Edinburgh - HAMILTON!. For the first time ever we will be performing The Wine Project outdoors as part of the Hamilton Gardens Festival http://www.hgaf.co.nz/events/dance/the-wine-project

As we pack for Hamilton we are working hard on our BOOSTED crowdfunding campaign to raise $10, 000 to cover the cost of Accommodation, barrels and cinnamon sticks for our 2016 Edinburgh season this August. We are really excited to be at 34% of our BOOSTED crowdfunding target with 20 days to go but we need your help to make it to 100%

Any donation large or small will help us on our journey.
