Shayne Carter, one of New Zealand's most respected musicians, has been working for 18 months on a new album which is currently in it's final stages of production.

The record, made completely independently, will be the first album Shayne releases under his own name, but features him in an unfamiliar musical setting.

As he explains;

"I wrote the entire record on piano which was either a brave or foolhardy thing to do considering I've never played piano before in my life. But the idea of a fresh angle really appealed to me. I liked the idea of naivety and primitivism and chords sounding new again and the idea of playing piano in a way "real" pianists wouldn't probably consider."

The project involved some preparation.

"I spent a few months investigating the solo piano Classical canon before I started writing. I knew these were the people who'd really explored the possibilities of the instrument. It was a completely new and unfamiliar area of music to me but I found so many riches. I loved how music with real feeling speaks across the ages. "

Shayne spent six months writing the material for the record. "I basically gutsed it out, sitting there trying to make my fingers work on the piano until eventually they did ! "

He has recorded the material with the assistance of long time musical accomplice, drummer Gary Sullivan and a variety of guests which has resulted in a truly bracing and unique music.

Shayne has recorded this material free of record company backing.

Pledges from Boosted will go towards the mixing, mastering and manufacturing of the album and assisting Shayne through the final stages of production.

    Hi there...I just wanted to add a very belated thank you to the people who supported me through Boosted and helped me get my album Offsider completed and finally released. It ended up being quite a while between drinks, running the campaign and getting the album out, but projects take their own time - often much to the consternation of their creators !. I thought long and hard about running a crowdfunding campaign - the morals of it etc - but in this day of Spotify and downloading and an increasingly bleak financial outlook for musicians, where we're encouraged by the news that we could maybe sell some t shirts , I thought a direct connection between the artist and the people who support and enjoy their work was an honest and fair one. Essentially it's a new age of patronage with the middle man eliminated I suppose. I feel the same way. If I dig something I try and support it too. Anyway..thank you to those who helped out with my album. It dragged me over a hump and helped cover bases that were extremely uncovered ! I hope youse all enjoy/have been enjoying this record. Cheers. Spc

    Well, we're now in the black with this campaign with a week still to run.
    Thanks so much to everyone who's chipped in, shared links and/or helped spread the word !
    If you'd still like to pledge you can - any extra funds still go towards the final production and manufacturing of the record.
    But with this backing now available that record should now be arriving in the next couple of months or so - so, a hearty and rather large Cheers to all you folk ! Your support has been awesome .

    A big THANK YOU to everyone who's contributed already to this project .
    It's really gratifying to know that there's that support out there and that there's seemingly a way of getting your music to people outside of the 'old guard' channels.
    I've also really appreciated a lot of the positive feedback about the music. I guess when making stuff that doesn't really 'fit in' anywhere it's hard to know what people will make of it but if it feels true to you then there's a good chance it'll connect with others as well, and as an artist I suppose, that should be your guiding light. I've been encouraged by the number of creative people I see on the donor's list as well - so thank you fellow artistes !
    A thanks also to my younger brother Kris who helped put together the Youtube video for this .
    Anyhoo. Still two weeks to go. I'm still 'in the studio' putting the final touches on the last two songs that have been driving me nuts, but they're almost there and I'm (very much) looking forward to moving into the last stage of production. Cheers folks !
