We intend to assemble the MOST PRINCESS LEIAS IN HISTORY for a World Record-setting celebration on Saturday 3rd June 2017 in Civic Square, Wellington.

We want Leias of all genders and none, baby Leias, elderly Leias, juggling Leias, steampunk Leias, burlesque Leias, bearded Leias, Leias with wheelchairs, Leias on stilts, and Leias with ukuleles! Size, shape, age, colour, sexuality, nationality - the more diverse the better.

There may even be a prize for the Best Bloke In A Gold Bikini. Now, that has to be worth seeing.

We intend to make a massively participative visual record of the event too, so will be encouraging all participants to bring their phones and cameras, take lots of photos and video, and be prepared to share them with the world. Some of the shots may be used in a tribute music video we'll be making later in the year.

BUT... WHY?

  • To celebrate the late Carrie Fisher and how she brought to life the kickassest princess of all time.
  • To commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of Star Wars.
  • To support the International Bipolar Foundation and the NZ Mental Health Foundation, charities helping people worldwide and here in New Zealand who live (as Carrie did) with bipolar disorder.
  • To frankly just have a jolly good time dressing up in frocks and wigs.

WHAT ELSE?
In addition to the main "moment" event of simply having hundreds of Princess Leias together, we plan to host Princess Leia and Star Wars entertainments. So far we have a punk Princess Leia band confirmed to perform, and interest expressed from "serious" cosplaying groups, so the seeds have been sown.

JUNE THE THIRD? WHY NOT HOLD IT ON MAY THE FOURTH (be with you)?
May 4th this year is a Thursday and we want to hold a weekend celebration. We've chosen Saturday June 3rd as it's during the NZ Comic Con / Armageddon expo festivities, at the start of the Queen's Birthday holiday weekend, and just nine days after the 40th anniversary of the release of the first Star Wars movie. We're going to nominate May The Fourth as "organise your costume day" so everyone is ready for the big event. It's also the last day of our Boosted crowdfunder!

WORLD RECORD?
The current Guinness World Record for the "largest gathering of people dressed as princesses" stands at 341, and was set in the UK in 2014. However, a subsequent unofficial record of 537 was set in December 2015. Our target is to beat both these records and establish a new record for the largest gathering of people dressed as the SAME princess.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE SO FAR?
We've started to build interest in the event by setting up groups and pages on social media, and getting out to promote the event to the Wellington public at the CubaDupa street festival. Our initial promo videos have been shared by local cosplaying groups and friends internationally.

We've secured more than a thousand dollars worth of sponsorship from the splendid chaps at NITRO, worth about a quarter of our core budget in real terms, to provide us with lighting, sound and camera gear, and crew. Huge thanks!

Thanks also are due to Wellington City Council, for providing the venue, staging, sound gear and additional tech support at really low rates. We couldn't do it without you.

WHERE WILL THE MONEY GO?
Our budget is split into six core areas: Insurance $1400, Site and Technical Management $2100, Tech $300, Marketing $500, Registration and Admin $200, Boosted fee $500. If we manage to make any savings we'll endeavour to compensate performers and volunteers for personal expenses they may incur, on a discretionary basis.

OUR ULTIMATE GOAL...
Once we have raised $5,000 and passed $500 to Boosted, we'll have the $4,500 we need for the event to go ahead! Woohoo! But in order to have our efforts officially recognised as a Guinness World Record there are additional fees and admin costs. That's why our ultimate goal is $7,000. The additional $2,000 (minus 10% for Boosted) will cover all the costs necessary to register an official Guinness World Record. (After that, it's all up to the Leias!)

BEYOND THAT IT ALL GOES TO CHARITY!
In tribute to Carrie Fisher, the One True Leia, any funds we receive beyond our $7,000 stretch goal will be donated to charity:

  • 45% to the International Bipolar Foundation, one of Carrie's personal causes;
  • 45% to the NZ Mental Health Foundation; and
  • 10% to Boosted in appreciation of their support of NZ Leia Day.

WHO IS BEHIND ALL THIS SILLINESS?
Princess Leia Day is the brainchild of Chris and Nikky Winchester, who have been making spoof geek music videos from their home in Pukerua Bay for several years. Chris is an actor, writer and musician, and Nikky is the organised one. You can read more about us on our profile page.

Thanks for all your help!

Citizens of the Republic, the word is getting out. NZ Princess Leia Day has been picked up here in New Zealand by both Stuff and NewsHub, and Chris will be speaking to Mike Hosking on his Newstalk ZB breakfast show tomorrow morning!

Meanwhile, over on our Facebook page, photos are starting to come in from Kiwis already preparing to join the celebration. Here's the incredibly handsome Steven Jones, wearing a classic Leia frock'n'buns he made himself. Inspirational stuff!
