Ko Tracey Tawhiao ahau Ko Mauao Te Maunga ,Ko Tauranga Te Moana, Ko Matakana Te motu, Ko Ngaiterangi, Ngati Tuwharetoa, Whakatohea nga iwi.

I've been called a fine artist, a contemporary artist, a Maori artist, a political artist, a Maori woman artist and lately an outsider artist. But what I'd call myself is A Modernist, Abstract, Cave, Painter.

I have been offered the opportunity to exhibit in Contemporain Pacifique in Le Havre, France. It is a show of contemporary Art.

I have been offered an exciting venue in an exhibition that incorporates several different sites. It is also the largest space in the show in which to create something beautiful. As well, I've been offered a residency by the Art and Design School at the university of Le Havre where I will create the entire work. This includes basic accommodation and a studio.

This exhibition is 50% funded from France.

I am asking for your help to raise the other 50% of the money for artwork production, airfares, freight packaging, insurance, some living expenses and installation of the work. You will be assisting me to bring to life a new work of art in a context that can reflect our unique perspective as Maori Artists.

There is a very tiny understanding of contemporary Maori art internationally and virtually no context for it outside of New Zealand. Fortunately Le Havre University is a place that sees the pacific as a haven of progressive ideas about the natural world and their focus on our Art is such a great way to express it.

What is very fortunate is that I've also been invited to speak at the Le Havre University Conference that will run in concurrence with the shows opening. This will bring Art curators, Artists, academics and students from around Europe in situ of the exhibition and it is the best place in the world to communicate as an Artist from Aotearoa, to those, who are creating pathways for contemporary Maori Art and Artists to exist in Europe. Shows like Contemporain Pacifique are creating context for the next generation of contemporary Maori Artists.Contemporain Pacifique! Come to France! Haere mai ki a France!

UPDATES

  • Le Havre 31 October

I hope you all know I've been posting updates on my Facebook page.

    Tons of them.

I'm three days away from hanging the work and I'm totally worn out haha. The organisational side of my project was a bureaucratic bunch of arse, so my materials turned up 8 days ago (3 weeks into my four week residency) and I had to totally redesign my work because of more bureaucratic rubbish.  Oh my goodness, institutions are fatally flawed because no one can make a clean, unencumbered call on anything. My mission in these situations is to find the person who can make a clear cut call and only deal with them. I've also learnt, experience is everything. So when the bossy lady says "i think ...." I just say No. And the shock shuts that mistake down before it even begins. You have no idea how long it took to get that muscle. "NO" is essential when time is of the essence.

Anyway. I've painted 32 x 2.5 metre triangles with 13 to finish this whole installation.  They will hang in three triangle formations of 15 triangles each and I hung a set a day ago. The last two sets get hung Monday and Tuesday.

Ive had to paint five a day and that's 12 to 15 hour days. Some days I'm faster I'm not sure why but energy is definitely a state if mind.

The installation venue is ENORMOUS.  I couldn't down size to make the timeframe be less hideous workwise. I had to up my game instead. That quote "find what you love and let it kill you" I get it now.

Upside is, that audio books saved me from going mad in one room with nothing, and I mean nothing but painting.  I've almost finished goldfinch by Donna Tartt and at end of the day when I'm waning I put on a scary story and it lifts my adrenalin and man that works wonders. I get another canvas done.  Volume is a whole other process. Like climbing a mountain, it's all uphill until you reach the top.
