Hello! My name is Talia Smith and I am a practicing artist,
curator and writer. I have been granted a curatorial residency at
Gallery in Sydney, Australia for six months; beginning in July
this year. I will curate and manage my own gallery space over the 6
month period. As part of my proposal I specified that I would be
showing emerging Australian and New Zealand artists.
I would like to develop my curatorial viewpoint during this
residency and aim to celebrate the work of emerging Australian and
New Zealand artists. At the completion of this I will return to New
Zealand with the networks and skills that I have developed to
create further opportunities and exchanges here in either an
established space or my own.
I am a Half NZ European, quarter cook islander and quarter
samoan descent artist, writer and curator based in Auckland. Since
the completion of my tertiary study in 2012 I have worked as the
Assistant Arts & Events Coordinator at Lopdell House Gallery,
Special Projects Facilitator at Tautai Contemporary Pacific Arts
Trust and have curated A Sense of Place at Papakura Art Gallery
with Ioana Gordon-Smith. I also write for Excerpt Magazine, Hashtag
500 words and have contributed to Magasine.
As well as having a strong interest and passion to engage with
the arts through curatorial projects I'm a practicing artist and
have exhibited in Berlin, Melbourne, Auckland and have had my first
solo show at Enjoy Gallery this year in Wellington.
Any funds raised will be of great help to aid me in getting to
Sydney and the costs associated with the residency. I believe that
this opportunity will be beneficial to the Arts community for an
emerging curator and artists. Any bit of help that you can offer
will be amazing, I appreciate the time you have taken to read
