The CSO has for many years enjoyed a close association with New Zealand composer, conductor and brass master, Kenneth Young. Therefore it is with great delight that in September of this year we will perform the world premiere of his new work! Composed for the CSO and the multi award winning Woolston Brass, this piece combines the forces of two of Christchurch's most iconic musical organisations.

Having started his musical career as a tuba player, Young studied composition at Canterbury and Auckland Universities and has won a number of awards and accolades for his compositions.

As champions of New Zealand music we here at the CSO are especially excited to have commissioned this work from Kenneth. His experience in both the world of orchestral and brass music will make for an impressive symphony.

A commission of this nature takes a lot of time and energy on behalf of the composer and this needs to be rewarded. With this campaign we hope to raise enough money to cover at least two thirds of the cost of the commission - if not the entire amount. Join us by contributing to this campaign. Your donation will benefit not only the CSO, our audience and the Woolston Brass, but also the wider musical community as this unique work will live on in the canon of New Zealand symphonic works for many, many years to come.

This work is something I’ve dreamt about for many years and I am just so grateful for the opportunity to finally sit down and write it.

I grew up in the brass band movement. My father put a cornet in my hand when I was seven and my brother also played. It wasn’t until when I was fifteen that I was fully introduced to, and consequently immersed in, the world of orchestral music; however I have never lost my love of and association with the band movement. I have written many works for band and frequently have the opportunity to conduct them.

The wide range of colour combinations to be found when blending the instruments of the band with the orchestral palate has excited my imagination long before beginning work on the Symphony last September.

I am treating the band as simply part of the orchestra rather than a separate entity, so the work really is simply for an augmented orchestra.

It is in four movements and I can’t wait to conduct it.

    Thanks for your support.

  • And we're off!

Last night we launched this, our Bold as Brass campaign, in the amazing surroundings of The Tannery in Woolston.

The Chair of the CSO Foundation and all round amazing supporter of the CSO, Adrienne, Lady Stewart, who was unable to be there on the night, has very generously pledged $1000 when she returns. She did however send a message for us all last night...

" I hope you will all get behind the Bold as Brass boosted campaign. Having just attended the European brass band championships in Perth,Scotland - our very own Woolston Brass and CSO playing Kenneth Young's new commission will be awesome! I will be kickstarting Boosted with the first $1000 and hope you can get in behind the team to reach their target".

We are excited that this campaign has begun!

    And we're off!
