XCHC (Exchange Christchurch) is a not-for-profit model set up to provide affordable production and showcase space for the creative industries. It's a place to experiment and test ideas, to develop and foster creative minds. And in keeping with the spirit of Exchange, we are prototyping our café and bar fit out using digital fabrication technologies which one of our tenants, Fab Lab Xchc will be producing along side industrial designer and design lead for this project, Justin Hughes.

Since opening we have been host to a number of events as well as hosting interesting and creative tenants. Festa Director, Jessica Halliday, The Body Festival Director, Adam Hayward, Fab Lab Xchc led by Carl Pavletich and Bridget McKendry, Chirny Coffee a local roaster and barista, Artist Adrienne Milwood and many more.

We're setting up the café and bar so we can provide a hub for the creative industries to socialize and meet new people. We will be hosting weekly bar nights open to public where people can come together, exchange ideas and see work being exhibited by the tenants. On top of that the café will be open daily for you to come and spend your day, dreaming with like-minded people.

Justin Hughes is the young mind behind the design of this prototype fit. He is working with Fab Lab Xchc to design the furnishings with three things in mind, one they can be created with a range of digital technology, they can be easily assembled and they can be produced on demand. The cafe is a way to test new technology, combine it with a need for the cafe and provide a young designer a chance to showcase and develop his talent.

Christchurch is such an amazing place to be at the moment, it literally is a prototyping city where ideas are tested and then broadcast to the world. After all it's being rebuilt which makes the perfect space for experiments to happen. There isn't a better time to get involved in this spectacular movement and there isn't a better way than donating to this project. It's not just about a final product, it's about a process that needs to be encouraged!

But hey, the spin off is that you get to come down to our weekly bar nights to meet and socialise with like minded people from all over Christchurch, New Zealand and the world!

We need $15,000 to go towards fit out costs which includes, materials, assembly and finish for the furnishings. Your contribution will go towards creating this public space for like minds. So support the creative industries, support the XCHC and donate now.

UPDATES

  • Thank You for donating!

Thank you so much to all of you who generously donated to our Boosted campaign for the Digitally Fabricated Cafe over the last month. We didn’t make our goal of $15,000, so your credit cards will be refunded in the next 2 weeks. The way Boosted works is it is all or nothing. As for the fit out we are pushing ahead and will look for both financial support and in kind donations, we will be delayed in opening our Cafe but not deterred!

    Sincerely,

    The Exchange Team.
