Join the Barbarian invasion of Australia!

Head Barbarian Jo Randerson and prodigious Barbarian offspring Geronimo LaHood have been specially selected to join The Blue Room Theatre Summer Nights 2017 programme as part of FRINGE WORLD in Perth, Australia next year! It will be our first time to Perth with a Barbarian Production and we can't wait to share our show with Western Australia.

Banging Cymbal, Clanging Gong is the founding theatrical cornerstone of Barbarian Productions and an iconic New Zealand work - as well as something of a personal manifesto for Jo. Banging Cymbal, Clanging Gong is her first, and still her most intimate solo performance work. The show was first created 20 years ago, and toured to New Zealand, Australia, Norway and Denmark.

20 years later, a Master of Theatre Arts graduate, New Generation Laureate recipient and mother of two children, Jo felt it was time for the punky, aggressive 'Barbarian' to hit the stage again - this time including a cameo appearance by her eldest son Geronimo.

Jo will be travelling with producer Sophie Dowson and Geronimo, making his international performance debut! It's a small team but it will be a big adventure, and although we will be flyering like crazy, and fully expect to conquer the Aussie theatre-going public, you can help us by assisting with flights and marketing costs (Perth is a surprisingly distant 8-hours away).

We can't wait to share our trip with you!

"In a society in which there are still so few dense roles for women, Randerson's gutsy meaty character is a real gift to New Zealand theatre ... a timeless political piece that calls the apathetic to action and re-energises those already fighting the fight...an iconic New Zealand work." - Fiona McNamara, Theatreview 2016

  • Geronimo is learning 'Strayan

Geronimo has been brushing up his Aussie lingo so that he will be able to blend in on the other side of the ditch.

He also wanted me to say a big thanks to all the people who've contributed to the trip so far, especially Giddy! Time is counting down - and although people have been distracted by Earthquakes, floods etc, and probably Christmas too - we really hope you'll encourage your friends to chuck a few prawns on this particular barbie.
