Image for Not To Speak Is To Speak

Last year a friend of mine took a photo which shocked me. It happened during a mural project I run called BRADLEY LANE in Glen Innes, Auckland. A young barefoot boy was rummaging through a waste bin behind a secondhand shop. He found a book, then sat down and continued to read it in the bin. Immediately I started to ask myself questions about the conditions this boy lives in. Why is he rummaging through a waste bin? Are there any books at home? Does this level of poverty still exist? 'Not To Speak Is To Speak' is a solo exhibition by Gary Silipa at Fresh Gallery Otara, inspired by the photo of the young boy and will explore how art can be used as a medium to draw attention to social issues troubling our community. The exhibition is named after a quote from Dietrich Bonhoeffer, renowned opponent of the Nazi regime: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us guiltless. Not to speak is to speak. Not to act is to act.”
