Emily Mafile’o (Tongan/Maori/Scottish/English)
Mafile’o photographs what she sees and experiences; her world. She explores the idea of time/ta, space/va and personality. She seeks to evaluate the mundane/ ordinary.
Her work is made up of snapshots taken of family, friends and acquaintances shot in both Auckland and Tonga, making that cultural crossover almost indistinguishable, and allows ambiguity to occur with ta and va. Her greatest Artist influence Nan Goldin believes that ‘pictures come out of relationships, not observations’.
‘My photographs are not only my voice, but the many voices of Tongans whether they be full Tongan, diasporic Tonga, hafi kasi, or quarter who appear in them.’
