Jonathan Palmer

Jonathan is a conductor, teacher, and singer from Auckland. He studied at the University of Auckland under the tutelage of Robert Wiremu and Karen Grylls where he earned a BMus with First Class Honours in Performance Voice. He also holds a BA in Ancient History, and a Graduate Diploma in Secondary Teaching. He has been the recipient of a number of awards and scholarships including the Kathleen Reardon Memorial Music Scholarship, and the Marie d’Albini and Evelyn M. Harris Singing Scholarships. In 2012 he was awarded the Conductor’s development prize at the Auckland Regional of the NZCF Big Sing.

Jonathan teaches Mathematics at Rangitoto College as the curriculum leader of Accelerate Mathematics. Since 2012 he has also directed the school’s choral programme including the chamber choir, The Fundamentals. As Musical Director he has lead the choir to considerable success including a Gold Award at the 2014 NZCF Big Sing Finale, and two Gold Medals at the 2015 Grand Prix of Nations in Magdeburg, Germany. The choir has also been awarded best performance of an acapella piece at the Auckland Regional of Big Sing in 2014 and 2016 as well as best performance by a Mixed Choir in 2014 and 2015.

Jonathan was appointed Assistant Musical Director to the North Shore Chorale for 2016 and Assistant Director of Choirs at Takapuna Grammar School. Jonathan is in demand as a choral clinician, taking workshops with several community choirs. He was a member of the New Zealand Secondary Students Choir and the New Zealand Youth Choir and is currently a member of Voices New Zealand Chamber Choir.

In August of 2016 he will begin a Master of Music in Choral Conducting at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Jonathan holds an Associate Instructorship, which generously covers the cost of most of the tuition, and is currently fundraising to provide support for the remaining tuition, additional course costs, and health insurance.
