I am the facilitator of WAI - the Women's Art Initiative, an artist and PhD creative arts student at Massey University. WAI was instigated as a direct response to my own experience of making art to self-represent my own 13 years of intimate partner violence.
In 2012 I created a body of paintings which shared this passage of darkness. Speaking openly about this traumatic time in my life was incredibly empowering, and many people approached me with their own narratives of violence. The experience of self-representation from a non-therapeutic perspective was something that I wanted to be able to share with other women. Thanks to the encouragement of Women's Refuge, WAI was instigated in 2013 and has gone from strength to strength since then.
