Matthew Staijen

Matthew is a Dutch Maori; he was born in Apeldoorn, Holland. He was the Deputy Head-Boy and 1st XV Captain at St John’s College, Hamilton for 2013. Matthew played Romeo in the 2012 School Production of Romeo & Juliet. He performs for theatre company Fullhouse Productions in ‘Improv Combat’. Matthew performed in The Tempest at the annual Hamilton Arts Festival. He attended NSSP in 2011, after performing Thisbe in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and last year, after performing Narissa in Merchant of Venice. He is attending Victoria University, studying Theatre and Film. Matthew was also awadred with a Scholarship in Drama after his end of year exams while gaining university entrance. He can not wait for this year as so many new experiences and oppertunites have arrived for him.

Matthew is one of the 24 students selected from over 5500 secondary students to be members of the prestigious Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand Young Shakespeare Company 2014 (SGCNZ YSC 2014). This group of young people, chosen to represent New Zealand, will travel to the UK from 4-23 July 2014, where they will undertake intensive theatre workshops and rehearsals culminating in the public performance of an hour of a Shakespeare play on stage at Shakespeare’s Globe, London.
