Dorothy Raphael

Dorothy Raphael trained as a classical percussionist at the New Zealand School of Music completing her BMus in 2010 and Postgraduate Diploma in 2013. She performed in the Victoria University May 2014 Graduation Ceremonies showcasing ‘The best of the NZSM.’ She has studied with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra percussionists Bruce McKinnon, Lenny Sakofsky and Larry Reese. After a recent trip to the UK, she has been offered a place and a scholarship on the Orchestral Artistry Artist Masters’ programme for 2014 at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. She will study for two years with London Symphony Orchestra’s Tony Bedewi and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestras’s Adrian Spillett.

Dorothy is currently Principle Percussion for the National Youth Orchestra, and plays in many ensembles such as Orchestra Wellington, Wellington Youth Orchestra and as a casual player for the NZSO. She joined Strike Percussion in July 2013 for John Psathas’ Between Zero and One, a sell-out work in the NZ International Arts Festival; she is also working as a performer in Strike’s Schools’ Concert Programme. Before leaving for London, Dorothy is enjoying working as a freelance percussionist across New Zealand and as a community class teacher for Wellington’s Community Music Junction. Alongside her passion for orchestral and chamber music, she will spend more time learning mbira and marimba from Zimbabwean Shona culture, West African djembe and dance, and participating in as much community music as possible.
